What is Biodiesel
Biodiesel refers to a vegetable oil or animal fat-based diesel fuel consisting of long-chain alkyl (methyl, ethyl or propyl) esters. Bidiesel is typically made by chemically reacting lipids (e.g. vegetable oil, soyabean oil, animal fat) with an alcohol producing fatty acid esters. Biodiesel is meant to be used in standard diesel engines and is thus distinct from the vegetable and waste oils used to fuel converted diesel engines. Biodiesel can be used alone or blended with petrol diesel in any proportions. Biodiesel blends can also be used as heating oil.
Jatropha Biodiesel The crude oil harvested from Jatropha seeds needs to be processed into a diesel before it can even begin to compete with other energy sources. Jatropha biodiesel is the processed from of Jatropha oil and gets its power from the energy rich bonds found in fatty acid methyl esters (FAME)
Advantage of Biodiesel
Better Power – Better combustion ensures more power it has higher CETANE rating and more oxygen. Increased Mileage – Higher CETANE rating around 51 than Petro-Diesel of around 47. -Higher DENSITY of about 874 kg/m3 than Petro-Diesel of about 832 kg/m3 Less Maintenance – Better lubrication assures higher engine life as it has higher VISCOCITY (4 to 5%) than Petro-Diesel. Economical – Cheaper than any other diesel in the market as it will always cost less. Eco-Friendly – Made from vegetable oil and contains practically no sulfur as compared to PetroDiesel which contains SULPHUR of about 50ppm so it reduces pollution from engines and as it has no sulphur, so no ACID RAIN. – Biodiesel has higher oxygen content (usually 10 to 12%) than Petroleum diesel. This should result lower pollution emissions. – Biodiesel is much less toxic than petroleum diesel. This can be a real benefit for spill cleanups. – Biodiesel fuel is a renewable energy source unlike petroleum-based diesel.- One of the main biodiesel fuel advantages is that it is less polluting than petroleum diesel. Non-Flamable – As it has higher FLASH P OINT of 130 plus degree Celsius so fire doesn’t catch easily and doesn’t require license from Petroleum & Explosives Safety Organization.
Bio-Petrol
Ethanol (CH3CH2OH) is a renewable fuel that can be made from various plant materials, collectively known as “biomass.” Bio ethanol is an alcohol made by fermentation, mostly from carbohydrates produced in sugar or starch crops such as corn, sugarcane, or sweet sorghum. Cellulosic biomass, derived from non-food sources, such as trees and grasses, is also being developed as a feedstock for ethanol production. Ethanol can be used as a fuel for vehicles in its pure form (E100), but it is usually used as a gasoline additive to increase octane and improve vehicle emissions.
Advantages of Bio-ethanol
❑Reduced air pollution compared to conventional fuels. ❑Bio-ethanol also has the lower taxation. ❑Environment-friendly petrol. ❑Lower Price. ❑Renewable source of energy
